FAQ'S

DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO HAVE A USA MEMBERSHIP TO REGISTER?

All OWA wrestlers must have a current USA Membership to purchase annual or seasonal training packages. You will need to enter your ID during registration, so please complete this purchase before registering your child.

USA-sanctioned tournaments will also require a membership.

All USA cards expire and need to be renewed by August of each year.

OWA-hosted camps and mini-sessions, such as Lil Grapplers, usually do not require a USA membership; please see program page for guidelines on each session.

WHAT DO WE BRING/WEAR ON THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE?

No headgear or singlets are required at practice - your child will just need a t-shirt, athletic shorts, and a pair of wrestling shoes. (No zippers, buttons, or pockets on clothing.)

There is a water fountain at the gym, but feel free to bring a water bottle with your child's name marked on it.

Some notes on wrestling shoes:

  • Shoes can be purchased at sporting goods stores and online.

  • There is a small inventory of shoes available to borrow at the front desk, but we cannot guarantee we'll have your child's size.

  • Wrestling shoes are not to be worn off the mat. Athletes will need to wear regular shoes or slides coming into the gym, and change into their wrestling shoes before practice begins.

  • Don't forget socks!

CAN PARENTS STAY AND WATCH PRACTICES?

Absolutely! There are plenty of chairs and bleachers for parents to sit and watch practices.

A few things to note:

  • Do not walk or step on the mats for any reason, especially with street shoes.

  • Only OWA-certified coaches may be on the mat with our athletes.

  • Please do not coach your child or yell at the wrestlers or coaches during practice. If you'd like to speak with a coach or give your child some pointers, do so after practice.

MY CHILD HAS A SKIN RASH. CAN WE STILL ATTEND PRACTICE?

The sport of wrestling requires close skin-to-skin contact amongst opponents. This close contact means there is a high possibility of catching or spreading a variety of skin conditions amongst competitors.

OWA takes the health and hygiene of all wrestlers, coaches, and visitors very seriously, and we are committed to maintaining a clean environment which our athletes can thrive. It is imperative we have the full support of our Trainees and Trainees’ families to help us adhere to these strict health policies as they relate to communicable skin diseases:

  • If a Trainee is unsure if a spot is contagious, he/she must be cleared by an OWA Coach before proceeding with practice. Please note the coaches will err on the side of caution and the Trainee may be asked to leave practice in order to be evaluated and cleared by a medical doctor.

  • If a Trainee has contracted a communicable skin disease and/or has missed practices due to a communicable skin disease, he/she will need a doctor’s medical release stating they are no longer contagious before returning to practice.

It's important you identify and treat any skin conditions as soon as possible. Always consult a physician with questions and/or if symptoms worsen or persist.
